FATHER`S DAY
According to www.history.com, the first time Father's Day was celebrated was in 1908 on July 5 in Fairmont, W.Va. at William Methodist Episcopal Church. Moved by a deadly explosion in the area in December that killed 361 men, Grace Golden Clayton suggested it to her pastor. Another commemoration was on June 19, 1910 led by the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd. Inspired by a sermon in 1909 about Mother's Day, she wanted to honor her father who had raised her. His birth month was June, and she found it fitting to honor him in June. In 1924, President Coolidge recommended that Father's Day become a national holiday and in 1966, President Johnson designated the 3rd Sunday in June to be Father's Day, and in 1972, President Nixon instituted it as a national observance.

GOD MADE DADS
God took the strength of a mountain
The majesty of a tree
The warmth of a summer sun
The calm of a quiet sea
The generous soul of nature
The comforting arm of night
The wisdom of the ages
The power of the eagle's flight
The joy of a morning in spring
The faith of a mustard seed
The patience of eternity
The depth of a family in need
Then God combined these qualities
When there was nothing more to add
He knew His masterpiece was complete
And so... He called it...Dad.

WHAT MAKES A NATION GREAT?
(Alexander Blackburn)
Not serried ranks with flags unfurled,
Not armored ships that gird the world,
Not hoarded wealth nor busy mills,
Not cattle on a thousand hills,
Not sages wise, nor schools nor laws,
Not boasted deeds in freedom’s cause -
All these may be, and yet the state
In the eye of God be far from great.
That land is great which knows the Lord,
Whose songs are guided by His word;
Where justice rules ‘twixt man and man,
Where love controls in art and plan’
Where, breathing in his native air,
Each soul finds joy In praise and prayer -
Thus may our country, good and great,
Be God’s delight—man’s best estate. |
FUN IN THE SUN
Progressive Picnic
Adapt this idea of a regular progressive dinner to a picnic for nice summer weather. Everyone should bring three or four paper plates, plastic forks, napkins and cups. Each course is served outside on blankets or picnic tables. Go to several parks or use the backyards of the folks who prepare the food. Play a different outdoor game at each location to add to the fun.
Pea-Pickin Cake
1 boy yellow cake mix
1 can mandarin oranges with juice
4 eggs
1/2 cup oil
Pea-Pickin Frosting
1 carton (9ozs) Cool Whip
1 small instant vanilla pudding mix
1 can (15ozs) crushed pineapple
1/2 cup peacans, chopped
1/2 cup coconut
Mix and bake in 9x13 inch cake pan as directoed on the box. Cool and then spread on frosting.
